The external market brings together sellers without formal gemmological expertise : generalist jewelers without an in-house laboratory, online retailers that rely solely on supplier declarations, non-specialised auction houses, tourist marketplaces and many online platforms. The quality and rigour of identification vary strongly within this segment. An independent gemmological analysis is therefore essential to confirm species, treatments and actual value.
Internal market
The internal market is made up of recognised gemmological laboratories and networks of certified specialists : AGL, Lotus Gemology, GRS, GIA, SSEF, Gubelin and a small number of regional laboratories, including Laboratoire Gem Quebec. These structures apply standardised protocols, maintain documented instrumentation and publish their methodology. Reports issued within this market can be cross-verified with the issuing laboratory.
Position of Laboratoire Gem Quebec
Our laboratory belongs to the internal market. We apply a tiered gemmological protocol : refractive index, specific gravity, darkfield microscopy, ultraviolet observation for the included certificate ; FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR, Raman, photoluminescence, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence and micro-CT case-by-case for the advanced Tier 1 report. Every report can be verified directly with the laboratory through the dedicated certificate verification page.

Certificate structure
Every stone sold by our laboratory is accompanied by an included certificate that is very complete for the price range. This certificate documents the species, weight, dimensions, cut, colour, observed clarity and the technical measurements carried out in the laboratory : refractive index, specific gravity, darkfield microscopy and ultraviolet observation.
For collectors, buyers of higher-value pieces and clients who wish to obtain an analysis equivalent to international standards, an advanced Tier 1 report is available as an add-on. This report adds advanced analytical techniques : FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR, Raman, photoluminescence, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and micro-tomography case-by-case. The level of information obtained is comparable to reports issued by the international reference laboratories including GIA, SSEF, Gubelin, AGL, Lotus and GRS.
The included certificate is well suited to common stones and routine transactions. The advanced report is recommended for high-value stones, historical stones and situations where geographic origin or specific treatment detection has a material impact on commercial value.

Why this site exists
Our Study on the External Market
Initially planned over two years, our study concluded after eight months due to significant losses. The objective was to verify whether high-quality stones could truly be found on the external market and to understand the origin of the sudden influx of gems presented as AAA at very low prices.
Our Place Within the Network
Despite our 30 years of international contacts and an adequate budget, we remain a secondary player in the direct sourcing network. In miners' priority list, the highest-value gems are sold directly to loyal buyers established over several generations. This reality reflects the historical structure of the international market rather than a simple budget issue.
The True Rarity of AAA Gems
A miner can go several years without finding a perfect AAA gem, it is extremely rare. The vast majority of gems in circulation contain inclusions or natural surface characteristics, which often contribute to their beauty. Each stone is unique and appreciates over time when it possesses strong qualities. Even with our privileged access and our relationships with major industry players, exceptional rough pieces capable of yielding more than 2 carats reach us only rarely, as the direct sourcing circle is restricted.
Our Tests on the External Market
We analyzed the recent influx of stones described as "perfect AAA" on eBay, Etsy, and other auction platforms. Purchases were made from numerous off-network sources. Despite our experience, visual verification from photos proved insufficient to reliably distinguish conforming from non-conforming material.
The Finding: Frequent Gaps Between Description and Reality
As the study progressed, the same observation kept recurring. Platforms without official gemmological identification carry a high compliance risk and require systematic laboratory verification.
Sellers and Chain of Responsibility
Very low-value stones are sometimes authentic and accurately described. As the price range increases, discrepancies between description and reality become more frequent. Purchases are often made through intermediaries who decline responsibility and present themselves as specialists without verifiable gemmological training.
Synthetic Technology
In 2026, laboratory-grown sapphires, rubies, and emeralds faithfully reproduce the density and refractive index of natural stones. Without advanced analyses (UV-Vis-NIR, EDXRF, Raman), visual distinction is difficult, even for an experienced gemmologist.
Study Results
Of all the stones acquired during the study, very few matched their description. Apparently extraordinary prices most often corresponded to non-conforming material. The study was halted at that point due to the lack of conforming acquisitions.
Platforms and Certificates
The protections offered by auction sites are limited when it comes to proving gemmological non-conformity. Some certificates accompanying these stones originated from different stones that had been substituted at the time of sale. Certain lots analyzed also showed measurable anomalies, including radioactivity levels above standards and undisclosed chemical treatments detected in the laboratory.

Preliminary quantified results
Total sample : 851 coloured stones purchased over a eight-month period between 2025 and 2026. Total budget engaged : 51,008 CAD. Average value per stone : 59.94 CAD. Minimum retained price per stone : 100 CAD. Scope : coloured stones only, no diamonds.
More than twelve platforms and sources tested, including eBay, Etsy, GemRock Auction, AliExpress, Alibaba, Namak Mandi (Peshawar), Chanthaburi market (Thailand), LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, Bonanza, eBid, Tophatter, Allegro, and bankruptcy and seizure auctions.
Observed non-conformity rates
Global non-conformity : 87 % of stones received show a significant discrepancy between the seller description and the gemmological reality verified in the laboratory. This total breaks down into 72 % of cases where identification, treatment or declared quality does not match laboratory measurements, and 15 % of incomplete deliveries in which advertised stones are missing on arrival.
Undisclosed treatments : 62 % of the total sample presents a treatment that was not communicated by the seller. The internal breakdown of this figure shows 38 % undisclosed heat treatment, 6 % beryllium diffusion, 2 % lead-glass filling and 3 % undisclosed acquired irradiation. For emeralds, 80 % of treated specimens (Joban oil and other resins) were not identified as treated. Topazes analysed present an irradiation rate close to 100 %, largely declared as non-irradiated.
Radioactivity anomalies
Eight percent of the sample (68 stones out of 851) present a specific radioactivity above 74 becquerels per gram, measured with a Geiger-Müller counter and validated by gamma spectrometry. This threshold corresponds to the reference value above which radiological management deserves particular attention under several international regulatory frameworks.
Certificate substitution
Seven cases of certificate substitution have been documented, in which the certificates accompanying the stones carried GIA or Lotus logos whereas comparative analysis and verification with the issuing laboratories revealed non-correspondence. These seven occurrences represent 100 % of all cases where these laboratory marks appeared in the sample.
Behavioural ceiling at 800 CAD
A recurring observation in the sample : beyond a purchase price of approximately 800 CAD, seller behaviour shifts. Buyers at this price level more frequently carry out an independent laboratory verification before final payment or recourse. Sources associated with the most severe non-conformities tend to avoid this price bracket.
Documented Study, External Scientific Validation and Publication
This study was formalised as a scientific Research Note deposited on Zenodo on April 22, 2026 (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19699431). It documents 851 coloured stones purchased across 12 platforms between September 2024 and May 2025, an 87 % overall non-conformity rate, a taxonomy of 10 archetypes of misleading laboratories and certificates, and a full gemmological protocol (RI, SG, darkfield, FTIR, UV-Vis-NIR, Raman, EDXRF, gamma spectrometry).
The methodology and conclusions are validated by an external independent research collaborator: Nathalie Thomas, GG (GIA, 1996), geologist and scientific writer affiliated with the Gem and Mineral Federation of Canada (GMFC, Kitchener, Ontario). This external institutional co-authorship guarantees the editorial independence of the paper.
